Watching foreign language content isn’t just a phase for English speakers – in fact, over 50% of English speakers now watch international shows and movies, with young people leading all age groups. It’s further proof that viewers like to watch different languages, cultures, and places.
Want some ideas of what to stream in 2025 to take you on a new journey? Here’s our picks:
The Leopard (Netflix)
Netflix has announced a six-part series based on the novel of the same name by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. The story depicts Italy before reunification in 1860s Sicily.
Judging by the teaser trailer, no expense has been spared on the production, with stunning backdrops and costumes. The cast includes Kim Rossi Stuart, Saul Nanni, and Benedetta Porcaroli of Netflix’s show Baby.
The Leopard will air sometime in 2025 on Netflix.
When the Stars Gossip (Netflix)
Netflix has been the king of kdrama content in recent years, and 2025 is already starting off strong with When the Stars Gossip. The series stars Lee Min-Ho and Gong Hyo-Jin – two Korean superstars – as a space-tourist and an astronaut on a space station.
The streaming service has had great success with airing Korean-language content on their platform, with Squid Game, Queen of Tears, and Culinary Class Wars drawing large audiences in 2024.
When the Stars Gossip is streaming now on Netflix.
“A new study by the researchers at Ampere Analysis found that most of us watch foreign-language content at least “sometimes” — and some of the 54 percent of streaming users ages 18-64 in the U.S., the UK, Australia, and Canada watch non-English-language content “very often.”
Whiskey On The Rocks (Disney+)
This Swedish miniseries is Disney+’s first foray into original Nordic content. The show is “inspired by the events of the 11-day standoff in 1981 between Sweden and the U.S.S.R. when a Soviet U-137 ‘Whiskey’-class submarine ran aground on rocks deep inside Swedish territorial waters” (Source).
The political satire boasts a strong cast and is a coproduction between Swedish national broadcaster SVT and The Walt Disney Company Nordic & Baltic.
Whiskey on the Rocks will begin streaming on Disney+ on January 22.
Squid Game Season 3 (Netflix)
Rejoice, Squid Game fans – the third (and final) season of the hit show is expected to air this year, only a short wait after season 2’s record-breaking release. While Netflix is tightlipped about what season 3 holds, expect even more surprises and heart-pumping moments.
The final season of Squid Game will stream on Netflix sometime in 2025.
Maxton Hall — The World Between Us Season 2 (Amazon Prime)
While older generations may not be familiar with Maxton Hall, the German-language show took the internet by storm in season 1, and season 2 is expected to be even more popular with teens and young adults.
The show follows a young woman attending school in the UK, where she meets and begins a romance with a wealthy student – but not without encountering plenty of secrets and intrigue.
Maxton Hall — The World Between Us Season 2 is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2025.
