What Foreign Language Content You Should Stream in 2024

Though 2023 saw the actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood, there is still a plethora of highly-anticipated foreign language movies and TV shows coming to streaming platforms in 2024. Non-English language content continues to rise in watch times on the top platforms, and it looks like 2024 will have even more content for viewers in a variety of languages.

Here are a few shows and movies to add to your watch lists this year.

Netflix has announced a five-part series based on the novel The Breakthrough: How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linköping (Genombrottet: Så löste släktforskaren dubbelmordet i Linköping). The Swedish series stars Peter Eggers and Mattias Nordkvist as the police office and genealogist determined to solve the crime. 

The streaming site has focused on promoting Swedish content after successes of shows such as The Young Royals (which returns for a third season) and A Nearly Normal Family.

The Breakthrough will launch globally sometime in 2024 on Netflix.

Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents is a Spanish-language comedic heist film set in Buenos Aires. It focuses on a man who attempts to escape the monotony of his bank job by stealing money.

Rolling Stone said of the film: “Part of the sheer joy of watching The Delinquents is not knowing where it’s going next, only to feel that its many tangents and detours were dotted on the path all along.” (Source)

Based on one of the most famous drivers of all time, Netflix’s Senna is an eight-part fictionalization of the Brazilian idol’s life. The series was announced back in 2020, but is expected to finally be completed this year.

Netflix has announced the miniseries will be filmed in English and Brazilian Portuguese.

Senna is expected to air on Netflix in 2024.

This survival thriller film is based on the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed into the Andes in October 1972. The Spanish-language film was directed by J.A. Bayona, who also directed The Impossible, based on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Society of the Snow has received critical acclaim and is shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Oscars.

Society of Snow will begin streaming on Netflix on January 4th, 2024.

After three terrific seasons on HBO, the Italian series My Brilliant Friend is set to air its fourth and final season this year. Based on Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels, the series follows friends Elena and Lila over the course of their lives, beginning in 1950s Naples.

The series has received rave reviews for its performances. Other Ferrante novels have also been adapted to the screen, including last year’s The Lying Life of Adults on Netflix.

The Story of the Lost Child is expected to premiere in the summer of 2024 on HBO and Max.
